World Series Game 4 Pitching

October 28, 2012

World Series Game 4 (FOX 8:00): SFG leads 3-0

Matt Cain (SFG) v Max Scherzer (DET)

This could well be the final game of the series if the Giants have anything to say about it, and the Tigers really need to lift their game to force a game five. Matt Cain will try to add to his playoff legacy by wrapping up this series at Comerica Park. Since facing elimination in the fifth game of the NLCS, the Giants pitching has been almost untouchable, and the Tigers will need to do a lot to upset that momentum. Cain was near perfect during the Giants 2010 championship march, allowing just one earned run in 21.1 innings. In his last game against the Cardinals, Cain didn’t give up an earned run in 5 2/3 innings. In his two road starts this postseason, Cains ERA has been much higher than at home, but a good performance should still be expected.

Max Scherzer has followed up his eye-capturing performance in the regular season with a great postseason. He will also try to snap a six game losing streak in the World Series. In his two starts, Scherzer has allowed just two runs on five hits, while striking out 18. Against the Yankees, he went 5 2/3, allowing the one earned run and fanning 10 hitters. Scherzer has faced San Francisco four times and is 1-3 with a 5.12 ERA against them.

This is the second great pitching matchup in a row. Certainly Cain has probably been the better pitcher on paper, but clearly you can’t take anything away from the Tigers Scherzer. Cain did pitch a perfect game earlier in the season, but both have done a great job of late. This matchup is going to provide plenty of entertainment, but I see the Giants momentum and the pitching of Cain being too much to handle. I realise many Giants supporters would love to see the Tigers win the next two games so they get the title at home, but the Tigers have been playing so poorly of late that it should be the visitors getting the job done.
