Week 8 Fantasy Football: Start or Sit

October 25, 2012

Fantasy, Fantasy Football, Football, NFL

In this week 8 edition of Sit or Start, the agenda is to point out those players worth starting above others based upon matchup and past performances.  It will not be exhaustive but instead will cover players who are considered undeniable starts that are primed to produce.

Quarterbacks

Starts

  • Peyton Manning and Drew Brees-Both are top 5 fantasy scoring QBs and they face off against each other in a game that should be a shootout with plenty of TDs.
  • Ben Roethlisberger-Big Ben is 6th in scoring in fantasy and should be able to move the ball down the field against the Redskins.
  • Eli Manning-He’s been consistent and with a matchup against the Cowboys, Manning and the Giants should be looking for revenge.  Expect a strong game.

Under the Radar: Andrew Luck is a top 10 fantasy scorer and with a game against the Titans who allow tons of passing yards, Luck should be a solid bet this week.  Carson Palmer could have value against the Chiefs as well.

Sits

  • Cam Newton-He has been less than spectacular so far this season and a visit to Soldier Field to face the Bears is not the formula to fix things.  He will struggle.
  • Matthew Stafford-Stafford is not a top 10 fantasy scoring QB this year and a matchup with a tough Seattle secondary will not help that.  There are safer options this week.

There are better choices than Matt Stafford this week.

Running Backs

Starts

  • Matt Forte-Forte has been solid since coming back from injury so look for a big game from him against the Panthers.
  • Chris Johnson-Johnson had been an enigma so far this season by starting off super slow and then having a few good games and last week had a huge game.  Though Johnson isn’t entirely out of the woods yet, the Colts are terrible against the run so he should be a solid play.
  • Willis McGahee-The Saints give up more rushing yards than just about anyone besides the Bills and that should give McGahee a great opportunity to run wild.
  • LeSean McCoy-McCoy has struggled to get touches in Philly so far this year, but the Falcons give up plenty of yards on the ground and McCoy should be effective when he gets the ball.

Sits

  • Shonn Greene-Greene has been surprisingly valuable that past few weeks but the Dolphins are top 5 in the league against the run.  Greene won’t make much progress.
  • Trent Richardson-Richardson had only 8 yards on 8 carries last week and sat out much of the game because of injury.  Odds are he won’t be 100% healthy this week and the Chargers are #2 in the league against the run.  He’s not a great option this week.
  • Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams-Williams has been MIA for most of the season and Stewart is coming back from injury and should get most of the work going forward.  Trouble is they face the Bears who are best in the league against the run.  Look elsewhere.

Wide Receivers

Starts

  • Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown-Both have been up and down each week as one ends up with a TD and the other gets more targets.  Both should have value again against the Redskins in a game that could be a shootout.
  • Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker-Both are top 25 receivers and should have a field day against the Saints secondary.
  • Randle Cobb-Cobb has been sensational for the Packers so far this year.  He is a must start.
  • Josh Gordon-Gordon has 4 touchdowns in 3 weeks and the Browns will need to pass to stay in the game against the Chargers.  Gordon should have plenty of targets and a great chance to excel.

Look for Josh Gordon to play well again this week.

Sits

  • Steve Smith-Smith is the top target on a team that is struggling. Cam Newton looks lost, like much of the offense in general, and Smith will feel that.  Add to the scenario that they are playing the Bears and it makes Smith tough to trust, even if he is the only option.
  • Brandon Lloyd-Lloyd had been the odd man out many times so far in New England being that he is the 4th option (5th if Ridley is counted) for the offense and now that everyone is else he just isn’t doing much with his share of the targets.  Add to it that the Rams are pretty strong against the pass and Lloyd could end up with another 50 yard day at best.

Warnings: Both Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald have been inconsistent (that is a critique of their QBs as well) and both play strong defenses in the Seahawks and 49ers respectively.  They need to be started but don’t assume double digit points for each.

Tight Ends

Start

  • Rob Gronkowski-He scored twice last week and he should be back on track now.
  • Antonio Gates-While he hasn’t been the Gates of past he still is the top option for the Chargers and he should be relied upon heavily.
  • Dustin Keller-Keller is now healthy and should be a nice play for the Jets who will need to pass to win this week.

Sits

  • Jermichael Finley-He just is not being factored into the offense like expected and he is having terrible drops when thrown to.
  • Brandon Pettigrew-He could struggle this week like much of the offense against Seattle.

Warning-Vernon Davis has zero points last week against Seattle and this week the matchup is Arizona who held Kyle Rudolph to zero points.  Davis could easily have a big game but it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Kickers

Start

  • Lawrence Tynes is a top 5 kicker in fantasy scoring.  He’s a must play.
  • Jason Hanson-he averages the most points per game for a kicker.  The Lions will need him this week if they expect to score much at all.

Sit

  • Mason Crosby-Crosby is the kicker for the high octane Packers but he is towards the bottom in points per game for kickers.  Expect a lot of extra point kickers for him this week and not much else.
  • Rob Bironas-Last season he had plenty of opportunities to shine.  This year he has been used less as the offense has been scoring more touchdowns.  He just isn’t a top 10 kicker.

Defense

Start

  • The Patriots defense has been solid lately and with the Rams up next they should continue being a strong play.
  • The Chargers could be a good play this week since they are so strong against the run and face a Browns team that won’t be able to run the ball even a bit with Richardson in question.
  • The Bears defense is tops in the league in fantasy scoring.  They are a must play.

Sit

  • The Steelers defense has been decent this year but with the Redskins in town they could be giving up tons of points.
  • The Jets defense gives up too many yards on the ground to be effective anymore.  They could give up plenty of points to the Dolphins.
