World Series Pitching Matchup Game 1

October 24, 2012

Barry Zito (SF) v.s. Justin Verlander (DET)

This matchup features the best pitcher in baseball against one of the Giants most experienced pitchers in Barry Zito. Justin Verlander is on the mound for the Tigers, and I believe that the pressure on him will be immense to get his team off to the best possible start in this fall classic. Verlander was 17-8 with 239 strikeouts this season, and though his record wasn’t as good as others, he has been a really dominant pitcher in almost every start he’s had.

He will remember quite a few of these Giants hitters from his one inning in the All Star game this year, and though he was throwing over 100 MPH almost every pitch in that game, we must remember that he did get beaten up by guys like Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey, though Melky Cabrera not being in the San Francisco team will be of some relief. Verlander was 8-6 on the road with a 3.57 ERA, but as all the playoff games are, nothing will be like the regular season in this game one of the World Series.

Verlander goes against a solid Giants pitcher in Barry Zito. Zito was the pitcher on the mound when the Giants got their rally going against the Cardinals. In that game, he went 7.2 innings, failing to give up a run on six hits while striking out six.

He pitched very strongly in that game after a poor relief appearance against Cincinatti in the NLDS. In 2011, Zito had an appearance against the Tigers. He won that game last year, and he didn’t give up a run on five hits through six innings, though he did strikeout only one batter and walk two.

All the Giants will be wanting is to lock down the Tigers offense as they look to get runs against the Tigers ace.

This will be a really interesting matchup. If Zito pitches as he has this postseason and as well as he did against the Tigers last season, then he’ll give the Giants a good shot at getting a win. San Francisco will need to get to Verlander early, but I see Verlander’s experience and prowess being too much. He has been such a great pitcher this postseason and did very well against both Oakland and the Yankees.

This will be a completely different experience against a National League team who they clearly don’t face too often, but thats what match this matchup so interesting. I’ll be hoping for this game to be nice and close, purely for an entertainment point of view and to set the tone for the rest of the series.
