NLCS Friday Pitching Matchup

October 19, 2012

STL lead 3-1

Barry Zito (SFG) v Lance Lynn (STL)

The San Francisco Giants will send one of their very experienced pitchers in Barry Zito to the mound to try and keep the National League Championship Series alive. Zito has pitched only once this postseason, and that was a 2 and 2/3 relief outing against the Reds. He gave up two runs on four hits, while he also struck out four and walked four batters. Zito was a more than solid starter for the Giants during the regular season, where he pitched 15-8, striking out 114 batters. He’ll be looking to shake off the postseason cobwebs and pitch like he did in the regular season against the Cardinals hitters today to give his team a shot at getting back in the series.

Zito will go against Lance Lynn, he will be out looking to get some redemption on the Giants hitters. In game one of this series, he went 3 and 2/3, giving up four runs on five hits. It is great to see Lynn back where he belongs as a starter, but the Cardinals will be concerned if he goes more than six innings since Lynn is getting into uncharted waters with his innings count. Lynn was the first man to ten wins to start the year, and like Zito, will want to remember that regular season form to get the Cardinals across the line. Lynn will benefit having had some postseason appearances, and won’t want to think about his past form against the Giants.

I think that this will be a very good duel between these two, but keep an eye on the Lynn pitch count. I get the feeling that the Cardinals will move on to the World Series at the completion of this game, but they won’t want Lynn to get beat up early. If he does, he won’t last more than four innings. If he doesn’t, he’ll likely pitch six or seven innings. You can’t count out the experience the Giants get with Zito out on the mound, and he’ll pitch well if he gets into the Cardinals lineup early.
