ALCS Game 3 Pitchers

October 16, 2012

Baseball

ALCS: DET lead 2-0

Phil Hughes (NYY) v Justin Verlander (DET)

While it isn’t the matchup we all dreamed of between Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia, this is still going to be a very good pitching duel. The Yankees send Phil Hughes out to the mound, and he is coming off five days rest after a strong showing against Baltimore in the ALDS. In that game, he gave up just one run on four hits, while striking out eight and walking three. Hughes has a very good post season knowledge, and though his record of 2-3 may say otherwise, he has been a very good post season pitcher in the past.

Hughes will go against the man I regard as the best pitcher in baseball, Justin Verlander. Verlander had a crazy divsion series against the Yankees last season. His game one start was cut short, but in game three he came back and struck out 11. Verlander has been on fire against the Yankees recently, with his last start coming on August 6 in New York. Over eight innings, Verlander gave up just two runs on nine hits, while striking out a whopping 14 hitters. He will also be happy not to see the name ‘Derek Jeter’ in the lineup, as Jeter is probably the best Yankee hitter against him. Jeter was 13-36 with a homer and two RBIs against him.

Overall:

This will be an interesting matchup, and I hope Phil Hughes will see going against Verlander on the road as a bit of a challenge. Verlander is obviously the better pitcher on paper, but if Phil Hughes is on his game, he certainly has the stuff to do a number on the Tigers lineup. Similarly, if Justin Verlander is anywhere near being on his game, then he can certainly throw plus 100 MPH and get a win.
