Week 3: Big Ten Football Preview

September 13, 2012

College Football

After coming off of a disappointing week 2 I believe that the Big Ten conference is going to try and claw its way back out of the hole it fell into (referring to the half of the conference that lost in week 2) I am anticipating a better week but not for everyone.

Game to Watch: Michigan State vs Notre Dame. This weekend two undefeated programs will face off to see who can keep their win streak alive so I am expecting an all out brawl by both teams.

Possible Upset: Notre Dame over Michigan State also Utah State over Wisconsin. Notre Dame had a close game last week against Purdue, which has been looking good this season, but now they will be facing the tough Spartan defense. The main question I have is this, “Are Maxwell and Bell going to be able to lead the Spartan offense well enough to score more points than the Fighting Irish?” If both of them have solid performances I expect Michigan State to win but Notre Dame might be able to shake things up this weekend. As for the Wisconsin vs Utah State game, Wisconsin just dismissed their offensive line coach which I anticipate will cause some issues for the Badgers. These issues could be small or large but Utah State has proven itself very competitive and with Wisconsin’s recent fall out of the AP Poll the Aggies may be able to capitalize during Wisconsin’s slump.

Expected Outcomes:

Minnesota vs Western Michigan 12:00pm ET

Winner: Minnesota

Western Michigan is always a good competitor but Minnesota has looked good this season starting with their overtime victory in week 1. Being at home I think the Gophers will be able to ward off the Broncos.

Nebraska vs Arkansas State 12:00pm ET

Winner: Nebraska

The Cornhuskers will try their best to keep their fans happy after dropping out of the top 25 as they fight for their second win at home. I haven’t heard yet if Rex Burkhead will be ready for this game yet or not. Either way I anticipate a Nebraska win but it might be a close one.

Ohio State vs California 12:00pm ET

Winner: Ohio State

I expect the Buckeyes to keep rolling at home as the face California this weekend. Braxton Miller has done Ohio State proud with his recent performances and I expect him to keep increasing his stats this weekend as the Buckeyes beat California.

Illinois vs CSU 12:00pm ET

Winner: Illinois

After a tough loss to Arizona State the Fighting Illini  will be looking to get back on their feet with a home game against CSU. I foresee them bouncing back and adding another win to their record. Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase may not take the field for this game which could mess with the flow of their offense but since they are facing CSU I expect that the Illini will pull off the win.

Purdue vs Eastern Michigan 12:00pm ET

Winner: Purdue

Purdue was disappointed not to get their upset victory over Notre Dame last weekend. They put forth a great effort but came up just short in the end. I expect that the Boilermakers will not have an issue taking on Eastern Michigan at home in their week 3 match-up.

Northwestern vs Boston College 3:30pm ET

Winner: Northwestern

Northwestern impressed me with their win over Vanderbilt, who appears to be a solid opponent this season. Even with starting their season at 2-0 it has been reported that Pat Fitzgerald isn’t being lenient in anyway with his players than if they had started their season 0-2. With Fitzgerald committed to getting his team focused I see his Wildcats beating Boston College at home this weekend.

Michigan vs Massachusetts 3:30pm ET

Winner: Michigan

Michigan got their first win against the dynamic Air Force offense last week while struggling defensively. Their game against Massachusetts should prove a good opportunity for them to iron out some kinks in their defense as I predict a solid win for Michigan against the Minutemen.

Penn State vs Navy 3:30pm ET

Winner: Navy

I don’t think this is going to be Penn State’s week for their first win. Navy is going to come into this game upset from their blow out loss to Notre Dame and I see them beating Penn State at Beaver Stadium.

Iowa vs Northern Iowa 3:30pm ET

Winner: Northern Iowa

It seems like Iowa is struggling this season, their only win came against NIU by one point then they lost to Iowa State at home by three points. Northern Iowa almost took down Wisconsin at the Badgers’ field in week 1 and they appear to be a confident team so when they go to Iowa City I favor them to beat the Hawkeyes.

Indiana vs Ball State 8:00pm ET

Winner: Indiana

Indiana has impressed me, I was worried about them going on the road last week but they proved me wrong. They are better than I first expected and since they have a home game against Ball State I will give the win to Indiana. Some information to acknowledge though is that their starting quarterback Tre Roberson will not be playing this Saturday or any Saturday very soon because he suffered a broken leg from last weeks game. However, their transfer quarterback Cameron Coffman looks like he will be able to step up and lead the Hoosiers offense to a win.

Michigan State vs Notre Dame 8:00pm ET

Winner: Michigan State

The biggest test yet for Andrew Maxwell as he leads the Spartans against the Fighting Irish this weekend. I think that he will perform well enough that Michigan State will survive for another win at home against Notre Dame.

Wisconsin vs Utah State 8:00pm ET

Winner: Wisconsin

I think the Wisconsin team is mad. Mad at themselves for their performance this season, mad at dropping out of the poll, and mad for losing peoples’ respect. I think this will motivate them to take down Utah State at home this weekend but if they aren’t careful things could prove difficult for them in this task.

Week 3 Big Ten Record 10-2
