94th PGA Championship: Round 2 Recap

August 11, 2012

Features, Golf

Since the start of the week, the word from Kiawah Island is that the one road in, one road out set up was causing 90 minute bus rides from the media hotel, complaints from spectators, and an obvious lack of crowds. Today, logistical problems carried over to the golf course where we watched the best players in the world, struggle like your average 8 handicap.

High winds were on display in South Carolina.

The Ocean Course at Kiawah was hit with winds in excess of 30mph all day. Breaking 80 suddenly became a decent round as the scoring average sailed over 77. Vijay Singh went out early and had an impressive 69 to post -4 early in the afternoon. After that, we watched as everyone fell back, and he ended up in a tie for first with Tiger Woods and first round leader Carl Petterson.

Woods had one of the most impressive post scandal rounds I’ve seen from him, carding a 1 under par 71 in terrible conditions. Petterson started the day with the lead, but gave it away quickly, somehow managing to hang on to shoot a +2 round of 74.

With 3 bogey’s on his final 4 holes, Petterson looked like the wind was affecting the Swede who has been quoted as saying that the reason he is a little overweight is because “I enjoy 10 beers and some ice cream before bed.”

Ian Poulter has a fighter’s attitude, and proved it at the Ocean Course on Friday. He shot a (-1) 71 by making tons of putts and just surviving. I like Poulter to end up being the one to give Tiger a shot this weekend. Other’s in the mix are Rory McIlroy who rallied to shoot 75 and finish at -2, Phil Mickelson who had an impressive 71, and Graeme McDowell who hung on to finish at even par after 36 holes.

If the weather continues to be similar to today’s conditions, this is going to end up being who can hang on the best. The golf course today at times looked almost unplayable. Will this be the week Tiger Woods inches closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 majors? If Tiger can close this weekend, he’ll get to 15, and certainly will be “back”.
