Erik Underwood’s Free MLB Picks: 7/30/2012

July 30, 2012

David Price has been one of the top pitchers in baseball this year

Tampa Bay Rays @ Oakland Athletics

The A’s have been red hot as of late, but tonight they’re going to run into one of the top pitchers in baseball.  David Price will take his 2.57 ERA to the mound in Oakland tonight as they return home from a long road trip.  I always feel like there is a chance that a team won’t be as focused as they should be when they get home from being away for a while, and tonight should present a good opportunity to take advantage of that.

The Rays have won 8 of Price’s last 10 starts.  During that span, he’s had only two starts where he has given up more than 3 runs, and two starts in which he has pitched less than 7 innings.  Very impressive from the Tampa ace.  His strikeout numbers are impressive too, as he is punching out 7.3 batters per start.  I love getting such a dominant starter at this Price, and I’ll double down and back the Rays for 2 units.

Play: Tampa Bay Rays -126, 2 units

I’m looking for Bumgarner to shut down the Mets tonight

New York Mets @ San Francisco Giants

Despite splitting the four game series at Arizona, I’m still riding the fade-the-Mets train.  Jeremy Heffner will make the start for them tonight.  He pitched decently in his last start, but I’m still not buying into him.  The Giants will throw lefty Madison Bumgarner, who has been dominant at home.  He is carrying a 1.89 ERA in San Fran, and should show us another good outing tonight.

The Mets are all but out of any playoff race, and the time to fade them is now.  I’m expecting them to be one of the major teams to close up shop and call it an early season.  The Giants should be able to put up around 4 runs, and I don’t think we will see Bumgarner give up more than 2.  I like the Giants with a final of about 4-1.

Play: San Francisco Giants -1 (-126), 1.5 units
