Erik Underwood’s MLB Picks: 7/27/2012

July 27, 2012

I think tonight is the night that Aaron Cook gets rocked

Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees

The Yankees had a pretty disappointing road trip out west, getting swept by the A’s, then scratching out 2 of 3 from the Mariners.  They will come back home to meet their struggling division rivals from Boston.  Phil Hughes takes the mound for the Yankees in a game that should see some fireworks.  I think Boston will touch Hughes for 3-4 runs in this one, but I have a much stronger feeling about what the Yankees will do to Aaron Cook.

I think Cook has been pitching WAY over his head so far this year, and a Friday night in the Bronx may be just what he needs to be brought back to reality.  I could absolutely see the Yankees getting to double digits in runs tonight.  In fact, the only reason I won’t pound the runline is because I don’t totally trust Phil Hughes to shut down Boston.  The Yankees have won 5 of 6 against the Red Sox this year, and I look for them to make it 6 of 7 after tonight.

Play: New York Yankees -1 (-134), 1.4 units

Philadelphia Phillies @ Atlanta Braves

The Phillies have been winners in 7 of their last 10, and that lineup of theirs that looks good on paper is finally starting to look good in the scorebook too.  Cole Hamels has been Cole Hamels, a dominant lefty who just inked a HUGE deal for the next 6 years with Philly.  They apparently have’t given up on their season yet, and will travel to Atlanta in hopes of keeping their 4 game win streak alive.

Ben Sheets has been great for Atlanta, but I feel he’s been a little bit fortunate to get out of a couple jams in the starts he’s made.  He will face a lineup that hits right-handers very well, and I think we will see him give up his first runs of the season.  This should be a bit of a tight pitching matchup, but it’s hard to turn down a left-handed ace like Hamels at this price.

Play: Philadelphia Phillies -107, 1.4 units
