Erik Underwood’s MLB Picks for 7/18/2012

July 18, 2012

Well, I suppose I should start this article by introducing myself.  My name is Erik Underwood and I created the sports website  Recently I’ve redirected the focus of the site to be more geared toward sports betting, a multi-billion dollar a year business.  Now I don’t make claims like some of the “touts” out there to hit on 85% of my picks, but I feel as though my insight is very good and can be valuable to all who partake in wagering.  Below are a few of my picks and explanations for today, and there are a couple more on my site.  Thank you for reading, and I look forward to posting again soon!

Clayton Kershaw and Cliff Lee have both had huge success at Dodgers Stadium

Philadelphia Phillies @ Los Angeles Dodgers

Two of the National League’s best left-handers will duel this afternoon in Dodgers Stadium.  Neither team has been particularly prolific offensively, so I wouldn’t be expecting too many fireworks to begin with.  On top of that, Dodgers Stadium is a pitchers park that will help to keep the scoring down.  The final factor is the starting pitching.  Two of the best in the league should help keep the bats silent today.  Cliff Lee has pitched 15.1 innings in LA and only given up 1 earned run.  Clayton Kershaw is sporting a 2.49 ERA and is averaging about 8 K/9.  He hasn’t pitched less than 6 innings in Dodgers Stadium since May 30th against the Brewers.  Unless something funky happens, this should stay under the total.

Play: Dodgers/Phillies Under 6.5 -103 – 1.25 units

Here’s hoping for another gem in Oakland from Colby Lewis. Last time here he pitched 8 innings, yielding only 2 earned runs in a loss.

Texas Rangers @ Oakland Athletics

Another day game, and another pitchers park.  The Rangers have been a little hot and cold offensively this year.  If they score 5 or more one game, it seems as though it is often backed up by 4 or less the following game.  Colby Lewis pitched well in Oakland earlier this year, throwing 8 innings and allowing only two runs.  Oakland will counter with left-hander Travis Blackley, who has pitched very well recently, including a start at Texas in which he pitched 7 innings and gave up only 1 run.  I was happy to see this total open at 8, which should be enough to warrant an under play here.

Play: Rangers/Athletics Under 8 +105 – 1.5 units

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Colorado Rockies

The Pirates are fighting for first place in the NL Central.  They sit 1 game behind the Reds and are hoping to avoid a second-half free fall that plagued their season last year.  They will send James MacDonald to the mound against the Colorado Rockies today, hoping to earn a series victory after splitting the first two.  MacDonald is under-rated in my eyes, and has pitched very well against the Rockies outside of one bad 5 earned in 5 inning start.  He has been great in day games this year: 7 starts, 3-1 with a 1.85 ERA.  Great value in a top 10 team here.

Play: Pittsburgh Pirates -110 – 1.5 units
